How to Weight Your Horse?
Without doubting, measuring weight through scale is the most precise way. However, usually only the equine veterinary clinic has the scale. For most of the horse owners to purchase a scale is unpractical. Whilst, weight tape can solve above problem, and it becomes more and more usual in husbandry. The weight tape is calculating by measuring heart girth (barrel).
It is suitable for mature horse, yearling horse and wean-ling horse. The key to keep track of changes by weight tape is consistency. While measuring, ensure to use same weight tape to measure, and not less than 3 times, then take average in the same spot.
HOW TO USE?
1.DIRECTLY MEASUREING
Before measuring, make sure your horse is on a horizontal floor. Start from the point of the shoulder, straight back along the horse`s side to the point of the buttock.
2.Calculation by formula.
Below are different formulas for the younger and growing horses.
Adult Horse: Heart Girth x Heart Girth x Body Length / 300 = Body Weight in lbs.
Yearling: Heart Girth x Heart Girth x Body Length / 301 = Body Weight in lbs.
Weanling: Heart Girth x Heart Girth x Body Length / 280 = Body Weight in lbs.
Pony: Heart Girth x Heart Girth x Body Length / 299 = Body Weight in lbs.
